Mary J Blige “What love is”, is a wonderful song that
can also be considered poetry. This song debuted in 07
on her album Growing pains she is not just a Grammy Award-winning
singer, writer she is also a poet. This song is filled with many different
poetic devices. “What Love is” should be counted a poem because it
uses poetic devices such as sound, imagery, and similes to change the
listener’s perspective on what love is.
First, the poem has 2 types of sound repetition and rhyme.
The first type of sound is rhyme. One example is “Reason to cry
yourself to sleep at night. Start a fight. Makeup, breakup, wrong, or right.”
The end of each line rhymes with one another. Another sound is repetition.
The chorus repeats 3 times through out the song. It makes the song catchy,
and helps you to remember the main idea of the song. The next example
of repetition is in the bridge. It keeps repeating “That’s love”. These
2 different sounds make this song sound good.
Second poetic device this song has is imagery. First description that appeals
to the sense is in the chorus.’ It shows that love can be sometimes happy or sad and gloomy like rain. Next example is when the song says “ darkest day, brightest night”. The word darkest helps to picture how
dark the day is. The last example is “Gentle Kiss”. The song describes what a kiss feels like when you’re in love. These descriptive adjectives help the listener to make a clear image of love.
Finally, the last part that makes this poem sound good is its ability to leave a new perspective.
The first new perspective is that love has ups and downs. ”It feels like sunshine. It feels like rain”
This is saying through similes, that love is sometimes happy and sometimes sad. Second, the song leaves a new
perspective by exposing the importance of love. ”Everybody needs it. We cant live without it.”
In this line it says that everybody needs love and that it is so important that nobody can live without.
Lastly the song says that love is a “reason to live”. According to the song if there is nothing else to live for you should live for love .These three different things leave the listener with a new perspective on love.
This song is filled with many different poetic devices and should be considered a poem.
The first poetic device was sound. This song is filled with rhyme and repetition. Second, part that
should make this song be considered a poem is that it has a lot of imagery. For example the song used
many descriptive adjectives that appealed to the sense of sight such as the word darkest. Finally,
the song left the reader with a new perspective on love. This song made the listener see love in
a new way through its many different similes.
